Plot[]

Nigel and Portia imagine a world in which their relationship would be accepted by Portia's community.

Lyrics[]

[PORTIA]
I'm tired of listening
To the same sad story
How lovers fail
Because it's written in the stars
The feuding family plot
Is starting to bore me
I'm thinking we
Can show 'em that's not who we are
It may take a little more persuading
For those who think it's better
That we are apart
I have no doubt their doubts
Will soon be fading
We'll show 'em how true love finds a way!
Even though - I know what they'll say

[PURITANS]
No, no that won't do, God has plans for you
If you live in sin, you let the devil win
No, no that won't do

[PORTIA]
But then, they'll hear the words of truth you've written from your heart!

[NIGEL]
If love is a sickness, then find me no cure
For 'tis only love that I know to be pure

[PURITANS]
Awwwww!

[PORTIA]
Then they'll think about it ...

[PURITANS]
Hmmmm ...

[PORTIA]
And pray about it ...

[PURITANS]
Yeah!

[PORTIA]
Then their hearts will open!
And they'll be singin' a different tune

[PURITANS/NIGEL/PORTIA]

We see the light
You changed how we're thinkin'
Cause we were blind
But you showed us the way
We're wrong, you're right
Salvation is yours if you do what is true to you
And you do it with love
Do it with love
Yeah ... oh!

[NIGEL]
Your father!

[PORTIA]
Yeah, he's a hard man to be moved
And he'll say ...

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
This is unacceptable, I do not approve

[PORTIA]
But I know you'll win him over
His heart is gonna sing
And he'll love you when you do your thing
Go on, do it. Do it right now. Do it

[NIGEL]
If love is loved purely
Then let me opine
That all love is
Surely divine

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
Good God, y'all ...
I see the light

[BROTHER JEREMIAH/PURITANS]
You've changed how I'm (He's) thinkin'
Cause I (He) was blind

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]

But you showed me the way
I'm wrong
You're right

[BROTHER JEREMIAH/PURITANS]
Salvation is yours
If you do what is true to you
And you do it with love
Do it with love

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
Ohh brethren! I say unto you

[PURITANS/NIGEL/PORTIA]
Say what?

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
I say - who are we to judge these two?

[PURITANS/NIGEL/PORTIA]
So true, preach it!

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
He's a writer, dong what he can

[PURITANS]
What he can!

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
She's the daughter of a preacher man

[PURITANS]
Whoo!

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
And they got the right to

[BROTHER JEREMIAH/PURITANS]
They got the right, they got the right to be together

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
I need no further proof
These words, they speak the truth

[BROTHER JEREMIAH/PURITANS/NIGEL/PORTIA]
And the truth will set you free

[BROTHER JEREMIAH]
Set you free

[BROTHER JEREMIAH/PURITANS]
When you do what is true to you
And you do it with ...

[NICK]
Wait!

[NIGEL]
Read!

[NICK]
Awwwwww!

[NIGEL/PORTIA]
Yay!

[PURITANS/NICK/BROTHER JEREMIAH]
Love
Do it with love

[PURITANS]
Yeah, we see (We see) the light (The light)
You changed how we're thinkin' (We see the light)
Cause we (Cause we) were blind (Were blind)
But you showed us the way (You showed us the way)
We're wrong (Wrong), You're right (You're right)
Salvation (Salvation) is yours
If you do what is true to you
And you do it with love

[PURITAN ONE]
Yeah, I believe in the power of love

[PURITANS]
Do it with love

[PURITAN TWO]
I believe I believe I believe

[PURITANS]
Love

[PURITAN THREE]
Yeah, yeah

[PURITANS]
Pure love

[PURITAN FOUR]
Can you feel it?

[ALL]
We see - the light!

Trivia[]

  • Nigel's line "If love is a sickness, then find me no cure..." may be a reference to Shakespeare's Sonnet 147.
    • In Sonnet 147, the poet speaks about how he regards his love for his mistress and lover to be a sickness, although he rejects a cure.
    • Although much of Nigel's poetry is lifted from (the real-life) works of Shakespeare, this is not a direct quote.
  • "She's the daughter of a preacher man" is a reference to the song Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield
